I do encourage you to tune your guitar before you continue - otherwise it will sound horrible, and people will not want to listen to your beautiful music...
Tune your guitar by comparing notes with your computers MIDI-bank: click here!
Warm up those guitar fingers as I demonstrated in the 2nd lesson.
The lesson after this one will be the last one of the beginner's course. However you can continue learning after this course in the theoretical course, that will be added eventually. Only in this lesson you will learn new chords - in the last lesson you are only going to learn Wonderwall by Oasis - consider it a nice bonus-lesson=).
If you made it this far I am really glad, and I hope you have understood everything that I have been trying to explain until this point.
Anyway - let's get on with the lesson shall we?
As usual - same principle. Imagine a G chord in open form but with your index finger replacing the nut. Root note is on the lower E string. A new open chord is introduced as well, Gm.

as the diagram depicts it is best to place your index on all strings, however it is enough to just fret the D, G and B strings as well

Note: these chords are difficult, and are usually only gripped and used on fragments. However it is still important that you learn how these shapes work by heart.
When you have done that you have learned all 5 basic bar chord shapes that constitute the CAGED system. In the theoretical course you will see why it is important and extremely useful to know these shapes - probably you have already noticed several advantages - for instance that you have many possibilities of one single chord.
In short summary the CAGED system (and you have to understand that the fact that they actually form the word "caged" is a product of chance, nobody actually tried to construct the guitar so that this system would appear, as far as I'm concerned anyway) is a way of describing the way the chords repeat in their corresponding shapes from one shape to the other. For instance all C major chords in all shapes you have learned so far are fretted accordingly, increasing in pitch:
C shape | A shape | G shape | E shape | D shape | C shape and so on
---0--------3--------8---------8--------12-------12----
---1--------5--------5---------8--------13-------13----
---0--------5--------5---------9--------12-------12----
---2--------5--------5---------10-------10-------14----
---3--------3--------7---------10----------------15----
---------------------8---------8-----------------------
If you understand this now then you are very smart. If you do not - no worries. It will be much more clearly explained in the follow-up theoretical course.
anyway back to some examples of the G-shape

Pearl Jam is according to me one of the best bands out there. Don't let the long name of the song scare you though - it's not that hard to play ^^

I demonstrate the strumming and the chords in the video

Verse 1
D Cadd9 G Cadd9 G
I seem to recognize your face
D Cadd9 G Cadd9 G
Haunting, familiar, yet I can't seem to place it
D Cadd9 G Cadd9 G
Cannot find the candle of thought to light your name
D Cadd9 G Cadd9 G
Lifetimes are catching up with me
Prechorus 1

All these changes taking place, I wish I'd seen the place
Cadd9 Em Em7
But no one's ever taken me
Chorus

Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away... (2x)

Verse 2
I swear I recognize your breath
Memories like fingerprints are slowly raising
Me you wouldnt recall, for I'm not my former
It's hard when, your stuck upon the shelf
Prechorus 2
I changed by not changing at all, small town predicts my fate
Perhaps that's what no one wants to see
Verse 3
I just want to scream...hello...
My god its been so long, never dreamed you'd return
But now here you are, and here I am
Hearts and thoughts they fade...away...
Chorus/Outro
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away... (2x)
Hearts and thoughts they fade...away...
